Back To Basics: Defining Your DREAMS ©
Dreams – we all have them. Dreams for our lives, our work, and our future. Do you see your dreams as achievable or as something beyond your reach?
Reflecting on this recently, I realized that dreams are moments of potential creation of our future realities. Dreams fade if left unattended, but when focused upon, invested in, and given thoughtful attention, dreams can become reality.
Our dreams usually revolve around pain points in our lives. Let’s focus on what we invest most of our time into -work. Here are some common dreams I have heard from business leaders:
- If we could change our culture, everything would be better.
- If everyone understood our goals and direction, we would be a great team.
- If only our leaders would lead.
- If I could just find the right person to take on this responsibility.
- I wish I understood people better, so I could make better decisions.
GSC has created an acronym (DREAMS ©) that we use to bridge between dreams and desired outcomes:
This is the pathway between a dream and a desired reality. Let me break these down.
Desired Result – What is the change or transformation that you would like to see? What would be your desired outcome?
Expectations – What expectations do you have of yourself and others while pursuing this journey?
Achievements – What achievements would you like to accomplish along the way?
Measures (metrics) – How will you measure progress? What “mile markers” (metrics) will you observe to ensure you are on track?
Sustainability – When the process is complete (at least initially), what behaviors/actions/results would you like to sustain for the long-term?
When dreams are considered in this way, they can become reality.
GSC uses this approach in consulting and coaching. Many business owners and leaders have dreams but struggle with how to achieve them through the chaos of everyday life and work. This methodology brings focus and process to making dreams a reality. Add your investment of thoughtful consideration and energy, and the outcomes can be better than you dream.
